Relaxed Bird Photography at Wechelderzande, Belgium
If you’re looking for a bird hide close to home in Belgium, this one in Wechelderzande in the north of the country is a gem—For me, just a 10-minute drive by car, one of its biggest perks.
What makes this hide so special? It’s privately owned by Wim, a passionate bird photographer himself. He designed the hide to be comfortable for his own long days of bird photography, but more importantly, he created a natural, photogenic setting that showcases the birds in the best possible light.
The hide isn’t about rare or exotic species, but there’s still a nice variety of birds. On a typical day, you can see around 15–20 species (squirrels count too!). For a few extra euros, Wim provides prey (frozen quails), attracting buzzards, hawks, and sometimes an Eurasian Sparrowhawk. Kingfishers frequently visit a small pond to catch their meals, and other feeders bring in woodpeckers and many more birds.
What I love most is the overall experience: well-maintained, clean, beautiful surroundings, and everything set up by someone who truly loves birds. Every detail shows Wim’s passion for both photography and our feathered friends.
Reservations are easy through an online schedule, but don’t be surprised if you have to wait—this is one of the most popular bird hides in Belgium.
Pricing:
- Hide: €60 per day
- Quails: €5 each
This is definitely a bird hide worth visiting—for comfort, convenience, and a fantastic day of photography.
